Driving licence theory exam in English in Poland

The state driving licence exam in Poland has two parts. The theory part can be taken in English at every WORD (Wojewódzki Ośrodek Ruchu Drogowego - the regional road traffic centre that runs state exams), for every licence category. The practical part is always conducted in Polish.

Which languages the theory exam is available in

Russian, Belarusian, Vietnamese and all other languages are not available. If you do not speak Polish and none of the four languages above works for you, the only legal route is a sworn translator you arrange and pay for yourself.

How to book the exam in English

1. Complete the medical examination and the driving course, and get your PKK number (Profil Kandydata na Kierowcę - the candidate profile issued by the city or district office).
2. Book the exam at the WORD of your choice, in person or through the government service at info-kierowca.pl. Every WORD in Poland accepts candidates regardless of where they live.
3. Declare the language when you book, not on the exam day. The exam software loads the language version assigned to your booking; the examiner cannot switch it once the test starts.
4. Pay the exam fee. The amount is set by the regional assembly (sejmik województwa) and differs between regions - in Warsaw it is PLN 56.98 for the theory part as of 1 January 2026.

What the theory exam looks like

The format is identical in every language. You get 32 questions in 25 minutes and you need 68 out of 74 points to pass:

• 20 basic knowledge questions, answered YES or NO. You get 20 seconds to read the question and then 15 seconds to answer. Ten of them are worth 3 points, six are worth 2 points and four are worth 1 point - 46 points in total.
• 12 specialist questions about your licence category, with answers A, B and C. You get 50 seconds for reading and answering together. Six are worth 3 points, four are worth 2 points and two are worth 1 point - 28 points in total.

You cannot go back to a question once you move on, and leaving a question unanswered counts as a wrong answer. Many of the basic knowledge questions are built around a short video clip of a real road situation, so reading speed matters: the clock starts when the question appears.

The practical exam is in Polish

There is no English version of the practical part. The examiner gives instructions in Polish, from a standard set of commands, and marks the sheet in Polish. Two things are worth knowing:

• you may bring a sworn translator (tłumacz przysięgły), at your own cost, and that person may sit in the exam vehicle with you - this is written into § 18 of the exam regulation;
• during the theory part a sworn translator may only be present until the test begins, because the test itself is already in your language.

Deaf candidates are in a different position: the WORD provides a sign language interpreter free of charge, and the exam time is extended from 25 to 40 minutes.

Preparing for it

The official question database has 3392 questions, and every single one of them has an English version - the same wording you will see on the exam screen. Of those, 2001 questions apply to category B.

Practising only in English has one weakness worth naming: the English wording in the ministerial database is a translation, and in a handful of questions it is a clumsy one. When a question feels ambiguous, the Polish original is the version that decides. That is the practical argument for working through the Polish questions as well, even if you sit the exam in English.
